Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a career-high 28 points from senior forward Sophia Ederaine, the University of San Diego women's basketball team used a huge second half surge to pick up a crucial 69-59 win over Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 21-5 overall, and remain in a tie for second place in the WCC at 12-4. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 19-8 overall and move into third place in the WCC at 11-5.

Ederaine scored her career-high 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including going 10-for-12 from the charity stripe, and she pulled down 10 rebounds to post her 11th double-double of the season. Malina Hood was the second of three Toreros in double figures, as she had 13 on 5-of-13 shooting, including hitting a pair of 3-pointers to set the new USD single-season record for three-pointers made with 71. Maya Hood also scored in double figures, as she had 10 points, and pulled down 10 rebounds to post a double-double. Sydney Williams also had a great game as she had nine points.

As a team, USD shot 36.9% from the field, while BYU shot 44.2%, and USD held a decisive 49-29 edge in the rebounding category. The Cougars committed 14 turnovers, while USD only turned it over 12 times.

BYU was led by the WCC leading scorer Lindsey Eaton, who had 24 points on 7-of-18 shooting, while Alohi Robins-Hardy chipped in with eight points. The Cougars leading rebounder was Eaton with six.

The two teams battled through a close first half that left the score even at 22-all heading into the break. After halftime, Ederaine completely took the game over, as she scored 19 of her 28 points in the second frame. Ederaine was an unstoppable force for the Toreros, as her jumper with 19:30 to go, sparked a 14-3 Torero run to give USD the momentum, and a 36-27 lead.

BYU then cut the lead back down to four with 12:55 to go on an Eaton free-throw, but that is as close as the Cougars would get, as a pair of Ederaine free throws sparked a 13-3 USD run to give San Diego a 49-36 edge with 9:58 to go. USD never looked back, as they cruised their way to victory, to remain in the hunt for the coveted No. 2 seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament.

The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they remain at home and host league-leading Gonzaga University in a 6 p.m. game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
