SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (1-3) were unable to stop the No. 37 Arizona Wildcats (5-1) Saturday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. While the Toreros had an impressive doubles performance, the Wildcats proved to be too solid in singles defeating the Toreros 6-1.
Doubles tandem junior Dana Oppinger and Drew Spinosa started the morning off strong dominating Arizona's Shayne Austin and Briar Preston 6-1. This is the pairs' third-straight win. In addition, Oppinger and Spinosa have one six of their last seven matches. The Wildcats equalized the score with a win at the No. 3 spot. Juniors Marta Stojanovic and Shani Blecher clinched the point for the Toreros, taking down Wildcats' Lauren Marker and Inge Hendrikx 6-4.
The Wildcats recovered from doubles quickly - picking up points at the No. 5 and 6 spots. No. 113 Briar Preston extended the Wildcats' lead to three defeating Oppinger 6-3, 6-1. The Wildcats run could not be stopped as Laura Oldham clinched the victory for Arizona, knocking off Spinosa 6-4, 6-0.
The Toreros return to action in their fifth-straight match at home February 28th, at 10:00 a.m. - PT against San Jose State.
