SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Mary Grabowski hit a pinch-hit walkoff two RBI single to cap of a thrilling three run seventh inning rally to knock off Cal State Fullerton 3-2 Wednesday evening. The Toreros were on the verge of being shutout for the first time this season, but scored three runs without committing an out in the seventh to rally back for the win. The Toreros have had a knack for late inning comebacks all season and now six of their eight wins have been by one run.
Paige von Sprecken and Fullerton's Desiree Ybarra were locked in a pitcher's duel, posting zeros for the first five innings. The Titans threatened in the top of third, putting runners on first and third with two outs, but Paige von Sprecken induced Fullerton's No. 3 hitter, Missy Taukeiaho, into a groundout to end the inning.
The Toreros had the go-ahead run 60 feet away after von Sprecken tripled to deep left centerfield in the bottom of the fourth, but the Titans escaped the jam after Tatum Schultz popped up to the shortstop.
The Titans cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Eliza Crawford roped a two-RBI double down the left field line to bring home Delynn Rippy and Missy Taukeiaho.
The Toreros wouldn't go away quietly though. The first three Toreros reached base in the bottom of the seventh; after von Sprecken walked, Kailey Hill and Tatum Schultz hit back to back singles up the middle to load the bases. Olivia Sandusky followed with a RBI bloop single to right field, bringing home pinch-runner Kyle McNutt. With the bases still loaded Coach McElvain sent Mary Grabowski up to pinch-hit, who entered the game hitting just .121. Grabowski came through in the clutch with a two-RBI single down the left field line to give USD a dramatic 3-2 win.
Freshman Paige von Sprecken (7-1) had another impressive performance in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits to earn her seventh win of the young season. Fullerton's Desiree Ybarra (4-3) was sharp through the first six innings allowing just three hits, but things unraveled for her in the seventh when she allowed the first five Toreros to reach base.
The Toreros return to action on Friday when they face Grand Canyon followed by North Dakota in the San Diego Classic. First pitch will be approximately at 4:30 p.m.
