SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team (1-6) suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. Today's match-up proved to be the tightest yet, with several third sets and tiebreakers alike. After a valiant effort from both squads, the Hornets succeeded - pulling away with a 4-3 victory.
The Toreros' doubles performance continued to thrive as the match commenced. Junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa stay undefeated this season after a victory over Hornets' Alina Soltanici and Deimante Bulatovaite 6-3. While the Toreros dropped a tight set at the No. 3 spot, juniors Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic secured the point. The pair defeated Sacramento State's Olivia Boija and Jennifer Ong 6-4. The Toreros have clinched five of their last seven doubles points this season.
In singles play, the match would stay neck and neck in its entirety. The Hornets equalized early, picking up a point at the No. 6 spot. Spinosa answered for the Toreros in a straight-set victory over Hornets' Deimante Bulatovaite 6-2, 6-4.
Although grabbing the first set, junior Mikayla Morkel-Brink fell to Hornets' Ana Loaiza Esquivias 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Soon after, the Hornets extended their lead to three after Olivia Boija ousted Blecher 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Oppinger shifted the momentum for the Toreros prevailing in a two-set battle over Hornets' Anna-Maria Nau 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).
Tied 3-3, the match would come down to Stojanovic in a third set tiebreaker versus Sacramento State's Alina Soltanici. Soltanici managed to narrowly edge Stojanovic, taking the set and the match 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2).
The Toreros return to action on the road in their first conference match. The squad faces the University of San Francisco, March 21st at 3:00 p.m. - PT.
