STARKVILLE, Miss. - The University of San Diego baseball team (5-7) dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 7 Mississippi State University (14-2) Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game to even up the three game series at one win apiece.
The Toreros once again got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the second inning they pushed across two runs on two hits. Jesse Jenner got things going when he led off the frame being hit by a pitch. Colton Waltner stepped up to the plate and unleashed his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to give USD the 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs then answered in the bottom of the second inning, as they pushed across three runs on two hits. The MSU runs came on back-to-back sacrifice flies, and a RBI single by Matt Spruill to move the score to 3-2 in favor of the home team.
MSU then added on one more run in the bottom of the sixth to put the game at its final of 4-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Waltner led the way, as he went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
PJ Conlon (1-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on two hits in 3.2 innings of work. Austin Saxton (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they conclude this three-game series with the Bulldogs in an 11:30 a.m. game.
