FULLERTON, Calif. -- The USD men's soccer team (3-2-2) snapped their winless streak with an impressive 3-1 win at Cal State Fullerton Friday evening. Darragh Vieyra and Patrick McGrath scored a pair of first half goals and Marvin Schmiege gave USD a 3-0 lead in the 65th minute.
The Toreros entered the match on a 190-minute scoreless streak, but wasted no time in this one. Immediately after the kickoff, USD created an opportunity when Torrey DeArmas dribbed down the left side to the end line and sent in a cross for Schmiege, who had his shot was blocked by a diving Fullerton defender.
The Toreros continued to control possession in the early minutes and found the back of the net in the sixth minute on a corner kick. Eric Budniewski's kick went to the far post and Darragh Vieyra headed it in his for second goal of the season.
In the 23rd minute, Parker Price and Marvin Schmiege had a give-and-go but Fullerton's keeper David Elias made a nice save to keep their deficit at one. The Toreros kept the pressure on the Titans in the 32nd minute when Darragh Vieyra sent a lofted through ball to Patrick McGrath, who had just entered the game. McGrath had a good look but couldn't convert missing wide.
A minute later McGrath redeemed himself. After Schmiege dribbled past a pair of defenders on the left side, he sent a beautiful pass to McGrath in the box, who sent in a left footed shot that deflected off a Titan defender and into the goal.
Schmiege and McGrath connected again in the 65th minute. McGrath attacked the top of the box before kicking it out the Schmiege on the left wing. Schmiege cut back to his right foot and unloaded a strike from 12 years out that snuck in the near post. Two minutes later Fullerton's Edgar Rodriguez picked up a red card, forcing the Titans to play a man down for the the final 23 minutes.
The Titans scored in the final minute on a USD own goal when goalkeeper Thomas Olsen mishit a pass back from a defender. Olsen needed just one save because of the Toreros' dominant defensive performance. USD allowed one only shot on goal all evening, compared to their eight on frame.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday when the host San Jose State at 5:00 p.m.
