Gaels Deal USD first WCC Loss, 73-68

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's basketball team was outscored the Gaels of Saint Mary's College, 20-8, in the third quarter, to help propel the visitors to a 73-69 West Coast Conference win over the Toreros.

After leading 44-36 at halftime, the Toreros came out in the third quarter ice cold, only connecting on 4-of-19 shots (21.2%), while the Gaels were red hot, hitting 9-of-14 (64.3%). This was the complete opposite from the previous game in which USD had the hot hand in the third quarter over Pacific, to help propel them to a win over the Tigers.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 12-2 overall, and suffer their first WCC loss, moving to 2-1 in league play. With the win, the Gaels improve to 11-4 overall, and 2-2 in the WCC.

Senior guard Malina Hood scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field, an she connected on a pair of three-pointers. With these 26 points, Hood moved into eighth all-time on the USD career scoring charts. Maya Hood was the only other USD player in double figures, as she scored 10, and fell just one rebound shy of a double-double.

As a team, USD shot 38.5% from the field, while SMC shot the lights out, hitting on 57.7% of their field goal attempts. The Toreros and Gaels each had 32 rebounds in the game, and San Diego committed only six turnovers, while Saint Mary's had 13.

For the Gaels, both Stella Beck and Lauren Nicholson had 16 points apiece to lead the SMC offense, while Sydney Raggio added in 14 points and Devon Brookshire had 13 points.

San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they travel to the Bay Area to take on the Dons of the University of San Francisco. Tip of is set for 7 p.m
