Nov. 28, 2016 SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Five University of San Diego women's volleyball players have earned All-West Coast Conference honors, the league announced Monday afternoon. Lisa Kramer, Lauren Schad and Hunter Jennings were named first-team All-WCC and Kramer was tabbed the WCC Player of the Year. Taking home honorable mention honors were Kaity Edwards and Kristen Gengenbacher.
A two-time All-WCC selection, Kramer led the league in kills during conference play (4.11) and was second in points per set (4.33) and eighth in hitting percentage (.305) as the primary attack option for a team ranked as high as No. 5 nationally in 2016. Kramer is the 10th Torero to earn Player of the Year honors and the first since Chloe Ferrari was tabbed in 2013. A USD student-athlete has now captured Player of the Year honors five times since 2008.
Schad takes home first-team honors for the first time in her career, after a stellar senior campaign. Schad was second on the team in kills with 262 (2.79 kps), while hitting for a .410 clip. She was also second on the team in blocks with 66, and with these 66 blocks, she moved herself into 10th all-time at USD in career blocks. Schad was named WCC Player of the Week once this season.
Jennings takes home her first first-team All-WCC accolade after being a defensive leader for USD in her final year in Torero blue. Jennings led the Toreros in digs with 411, ninth on the USD single-season digs list, and she has become the all-time leader in career digs with 1,467, passing former Torero great Jackie Bernardine. Jennings has recorded double digit digs in all but three matches this season, with a season-high of 29 coming in a win over UCLA.
Edwards, who just finished her first season in a USD uniform, was a big impact on the court for USD, as she finished third in kills with 22 (2.23 kps), and she hit for a .369 clip. Edwards also recorded 65 blocks, and led the team with 19 aces. Edwards finished the year reaching the double digit kill mark seven times.
Gegenbacher had a great junior year for the Toreros, as she helped steer the Torero offense to a national-best 15.03 kills-per-set, and 14.01 assists-per-set. Gengenbacher herself recorded a team-leading 792 assists (7.76 aps), and she recorded 244 digs. Gengenbacher led the Toreros in double-doubles this season with nine.
USD will return to action on Friday, as they travel up to UCLA to take on Baylor in a 5:30 p.m. match in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
