SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's basketball team had a balanced offensive effort, but it wasn't enough, as the Toreros dropped their West Coast Conference opener to the University of San Francisco, 82-67, Thursday evening inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 6-4 overall, move to 0-1 in the WCC, and have lost back-to-back home games for the first time this season. With the win, the Dons improve to 7-5 overall, and move to 1-0 in the WCC.
Cori Woodward led the USD offense for a second consecutive game, as she scored 11 points on 2-of-8 shooting, and went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe, while dishing out four assists. Sydney Williams, and Katherine Hamilton each added in nine points apiece, while Caroline Buhr had eight points, and Ana Ramos added in seven points. Buhr led the USD rebounding effort with 12.
As a team, USD shot 38.1% from the field, while the Dons were red hot all game shooting 56.7%. USD out rebounded San Francisco 36-35, and USF committed 15 turnovers, while USD had 14.
For the Dons, Kalyn Simon led the way, as she had a game-high 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field, while Rachel Howard scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Michaela Rakova added in 11 points, and Anna Seilund was the fourth player in double figures with 10. Rakova led the rebounding effort with 12, to post a double-double.
San Diego will return to action on Saturday, as they host Saint Mary's College in a 1:30 p.m. WCC game inside of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
