Poor Shooting Dooms Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's basketball team shot just 32.1% from the field, as they dropped a stunning 61-47 decision to upstart Santa Clara University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 21-4 overall, and move to 11-3 in the WCC. With the win, the Broncos improve to 19-5 overall and move to 10-3 in the WCC, while snapping an 11-game losing streak to the Toreros.

Maya Hood led the USD offense, as she recorded a double-double with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while also pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds. Sydney Williams was the next highest USD scorer with nine points.

As a team, USD shot 32.1% from the field, while the Broncos shot 38.3% from the floor. USD was out rebounded 39-35, and the Toreros uncharacteristically recorded 17 turnovers, while SCU also had 17 turnovers. USD was outscored in the paint 20-18, while the Bronco bench outscored the Torero bench 20-8.

For Santa Clara, Devin Hudson came off the bench to lead the team in scoring with 14 points, while Lori Parkinson chipped in with 10 points. Hudson also recorded 10 rebounds to post a double-double.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday, as they take on the University of San Francisco in the final regular-season home game of the season. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
