PORTLAND, Ore. â€" Behind a 24-point and 10-rebound effort from junior forward Maya Hood, the University of San Diego women's basketball team closed out the regular-season with a 77-67 victory over the University of Portland, Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Chiles Center.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 23-6 overall, and have secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming WCC tournament. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 3-26 overall, and move to 1-17 in the WCC.
Maya Hood led all players with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, while also pulling down 10 rebounds. Sydney Williams was the second of three Toreros in double figures, as she had 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting, while just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. Malina Hood rounded off the double-digit scorers for USD with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field.
As a team, USD shot 44% from the field, while the Pilots shot 47% from the floor. Each team had 33 rebounds, and USD only committed five turnovers, while Portland had 15.
For the Pilots, Darian Slaga led the way with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting fro the field, and she pulled down 10 rebounds to post a double-double. Kaylie Van Loo was the only other Pilot in double figures, as she recorded 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.
The Toreros will open playing the WCC Tournament on Thursday at 6 p.m. against the No. 6 seeded University of San Francisco.
