RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- The USD Softball team (7-8) dropped two one-run games to UC Riverside Sunday afternoon. After giving up an early lead, the Toreros lost 7-6 in game one, and then lost 8-7 in the final game of the Amy S. Harrison Classic.
UC RIVERSIDE 7, SAN DIEGO 6 (GAME ONE) In game one the Toreros held a 6-1 lead, but couldn't hold on against the Highlanders, despite giving up just four hits.
The Toreros scored their first run in the second inning on a Lauren Berritua sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Lauren Kane, who led off the inning with a single up the middle.
USD scored three more in the third inning to give them a 4-0 lead. Two of those runs would come on an error by the UCR shortstop, and the final run was batted in with a Mary Grabowski single.
UC Riverside got their first run in the fourth inning with a RBI single off Grace Hernandez.
The Toreros added two more runs in the fifth inning with solo home runs by Lauren Kane and Olivia Sandusky. It was the second day in a row Kane and Sandusky had back-to-back home runs.
The Highlanders erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Their first run came on a bases loaded walk, which prompted Coach McElvain to pull Hernandez for Megan Sabbatini, who would go on to walk three batters with the bases loaded.
The Toreros were retired 1-2-3 in the seventh inning to snap their three game winning streak.
Sabbatini (2-4) was credited with the loss after giving up three walks and two runs in 0.1 innings.
UC RIVERSIDE 8, SAN DIEGO 7 (GAME TWO)
In game two, the Toreros fell behind 6-0 and rallied but fell just short. Lauren Berriatua struggled a day after throwing a no-hitter, giving up six runs in just 1.1 innings.
The Toreros scored their first run on a Taylor Spence single in the top of the third. After giving up two runs in the bottom of the third, USD responded with three runs in the fourth. The Toreros scored on a Grabowski single, a Berriatua double, and a Spence single.
USD scored three more runs in the fifth backed by doubles by Grabowski and Danielle Mavridis. Despite the late rally the Toreros couldn't overcome their early deficit.
Megan Sabbatini, who came in relief for Berriatua, was credited with the loss after allowing two runs in 4.2 innings.
The Toreros return to action on Friday when they play Illinois-Chicago and Portland State.
