MORAGA, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end Thursday evening with a stunning 68-60 loss to Saint Mary's College in a West Coast Conference game at McKeon Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 20-3 overall, and move out of a two-way tie for first place with BYU and into sole possession of second place at 10-2 in the WCC. With the win, the Gaels improve to 18-4 overall, and move to 9-2 in the WCC, while also completing a sweep of the Toreros for the season.
Sydney Williams led the Toreros with a team-best 17 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field, while also pulling down eight rebounds. Aubrey Ward-El was the final Torero to score in double figures, as she had 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Ward-El has now scored in double figures in three of the last four games. Maya Hood led the team in rebounding with 12, while also scoring eight points.
As a team, USD shot 35.3% from the field, while the Gaels managed to shoot 43.9%. USD was out rebounded 40-38, and USD only committed 10 turnovers, to 14 for the home team.
Saint Mary's was led by Lauren Nicholson, who scored a game-high 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting, and went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Stella Beck added in 11 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes while Devon Brookshire had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they remain in the Bay Area and head over to Stockton to take on Pacific in a 2 p.m. WCC game at the Spanos Center.
