Second Half Rally Lifts USD to Victory

STOCKTON, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego women's basketball team put on a furious second half rally, and erased an 18-point halftime deficit to claim a 59-56 win over the University of the Pacific Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

After a second quarter that saw the Tigers shoot a blistering 84% from the field, and take a commanding 18-point lead into the break, head coach Cindy Fisher got the Toreros jump started at halftime. San Diego outscored the Tigers 16-8 in the third quarter, as the Toreros shot 42.9% from the field, while the Tigers shot a dismal 20%. This allowed USD to creep to within 10 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, USD had no fear and no panic, as they turned to the tandem of Malina Hood and Aubrey Ward-El, who each delivered six-points apiece to catapult the Toreros to victory. After San Diego pulled to within two at 56-54 with 1:20 to go, Hood stepped up a drilled a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left to give USD the lead. Ward-El was then fouled on the next possession, and she calmly hit a pair of free throws, with five seconds left, to put the game at its final of 59-56.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 21-3 overall, remain in sole possession of second place in the WCC at 11-2, and have completed a season sweep of the Tigers. With the loss, Pacific falls to 10-13 overall, and 3-9 in the WCC.

Malina Hood led the team in scoring with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field, while Maya Hood posted another double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Ward-El was the final Torero in double figures, as she scored 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field, which now marks three consecutive games she has scored in double figures.

As a team, USD shot 42.9% from the field, while the Tigers shot 41.5% from the floor. USD out rebounded Pacific 35-33, and the Toreros only committed nine turnovers, while UoP had 13.

For the Tigers, Desrie Finne led the way with 17 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field, and she pulled down eight rebounds.

San Diego will returns to action on Thursday, as they finally return to the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion for a 6 p.m. showdown with the University of San Francisco.
