SANTEE, Calif. â€" The Toreros (9-17) fell to Weber State 4-3 in the first game of the San Diego Classic II at the Santee Sportsplex USA Friday afternoon. The Toreros trailed by one run in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with no outs, but couldn't bring home the tying or winning run.
Four singles led to three two-out runs for WSU in the top of the third. The Wildcats got their first run when Mackenzi Corta hit a RBI single up the middle to bring home Mckinle Brinkerhoff, who led off the inning with a bunt single. Alyson Kulp followed up with another RBI single to score Corta. Their final run of the inning came from a Sara Hingsberger single, giving WSU a 3-0 lead.
The Torero bats finally made some noise in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kailey Hill led off the inning with a single and then Olivia Sandusky walked. Lauren Kane hit a line drive single down the right field line to score Shannon McKeon, who pinch ran for Hill. The Toreros would load the bases with just one out, but the Wildcats' Kirtlyn Bohling struck out Sarah Stone and got Lauren Berriatua to fly out to center to end the Torero threat and preserve their 3-1 lead.
The Wildcats added to their lead in the next frame with another RBI single, bringing the score to 4-1.
Senior Tatum Schultz led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple to the right center gap. The next batter Taylor Spence lined out the pitcher and Schultz was doubled up at third on a close call. Schultz's five triples are tied for the most in the nation.
The Toreros had three extra base hits in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap. Lauren Kane led off the inning with a double and then Mary Grabowski crushed a two run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Lauren Berriatua also hit a double, but was stranded at second base. Mary Grabowksi now has nine career home runs, the eighth most in program history.
Freshman Taylor Spence led off the bottom of the seventh with a beautiful bunt single. Kailey Hill then reached on a throwing error by the WSU shortstop, putting runners on second and third with no outs. The Wildcats elected to intentionally walk Olivia Sandusky, bringing up the red-hot Lauren Kane, who hit an infield popup. Mary Grabowski roped a line drive down the left field line, but WSU's Alyson Kulp snagged it and tagged third for the game-ending double play. USD has now lost five games in a row
It was the second straight Toreros' loss where they outhit their opponent. Megan Sabbatini (4-11) struck out ten batters, but was saddled with the loss after giving up four earned runs.
The Toreros face Seattle at approximately 7:30 Friday evening at the Santee Sportsplex USA.
