Aug. 20, 2016 San Diego, Calif. -- Before a nice crowd of family members, friends and alumni, the USD football team faced off against each other this afternoon for a scrimmage at Manchester Field. With a squad that features 13 returning starters (5 offense, 8 defense), the Torero coaching staff was able to see a lot of new players in action in a lively and spirited scrimmage.
All five quarterbacks saw action in today's scrimmage and did a good job moving the chains. Anthony Lawrence connected with Jonah Hodges out of the backfield a couple of times and eventually found TE Ross Dwelley in the endzone for a short touchdown play. Redshirt freshman Reid Sinnett completed some nice passes including a long hook-up with WR Trevor Barney along the right sideline. Freshman Alex Farina connected with local product Ben Ratzlaff for a 20+ yard touchdown, and freshman Mason Randall found Brant Berglund for a 7 yard score. The running game looked good with Hodges, Jereke Armstrong and freshman Jordan Charles getting the majority of the snaps.
Defensively the Toreros broke through the line a number of times to record sacks and collect tackles for loss against the Torero running attack. Senior cornerbacks Devyn Bryant and Jamal Agnew covered well in their limited action. Late in the scrimmage nickel back Scott Lewis put a big hit on WR Michael Bandy in causing a forced fumble.
USD's season opener against Western New Mexico is just two weeks away. The home opener will be a 6:00 p.m. contest at Torero Stadium. For ticket information, visit usdtoreros.com or call the JCP Ticket Office at 619-260-7550.
