SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 win over Sacramento State Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 2-1-2 overall, while the hornets fall to 1-3-0 overall with the loss.

"Outstanding performance, playing with 10 men for most of the game," stated head coach Seamus McFadden. "The lads battled and did what they had to do, fighting tooth and nail for the ball, and were just resilient today."

San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as in the seventh minute of action, the Toreros jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Ryan Camara skied a ball into the goal box, where Miguel Berry was there to redirect the it with his head. Berry managed to flick the ball over the reach of the diving Hornets goalkeeper, and it cruised into the upper left corner of the goal, to give USD a 1-0 lead.

Sacramento State had a good opportunity not go its way to even the score up in the 31st minute of action, as Ivan Ramirez fired off a shot from about 18 yards out, but USD's back-up goalkeeper, Connor Hountalas, was there to record the save, preserving USD's 1-0 advantage.

The Toreros nearly doubled their lead in the 59th minute of action. San Diego's Merlin Baus took a corner kick for USD, and he bowed the ball into a crowded goal box. The ball then bounced around a bit, until it found the feet of Michael Turner, and he hit a one-timer at an almost open net, but a Sacramento State defender just got a foot on it, to block the shot, again preserving a 1-0 Torero lead.

In the 71st minute of play, the Hornerts committed a foul inside the goal box, setting up a penalty kick situation for the Toreros. Michael Turner took the PK for USD, and easily scored the goal, to give USD a 2-0 lead.

The Toreros were not done just yet, as one minute later, USD put the match out of reach. Allen Luhrs went streaking down the right side of the field with the ball, split a pair of defenders, and crossed the ball right in front of the goalie, where the ball found Djordje Babic, who was all alone, and he hit a missile of a shot just under the cross bar, to put the match at its final of 3-0.

San Diego out shot the Hornets, 13-7, and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Connor Hountalas was credited with the win in goal for USD, as he allowed no goals and recorded two saves. His counterpart, Philip Bru, was saddled with the loss, as he allowed three goals and recorded one save.

San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they travel to UC Riverside for a 7 p.m. non-conference match with the Highlanders.
