SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up a hard fought 57-56 win over Santa Clara University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Leavey Center.
With the game tied up at 54-all late in the fourth quarter, USD turned to a freshman, and she delivered. Freshman forward Patricia Brossmann scored a lay-up with 1:34 remaining in the game to give USD a 2-point edge. Then, with just four seconds left, Brossmann was fouled, and she hit one free throw, to give USD a 57-54 lead. The Broncos then hit a jumper as time expired to put the game at its final of 57-56.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-7 overall, and move to 2-3 in the WCC, while also snapping a two-game skid. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-8 overall and fall into a 7-way tie for first place in the WCC with a 3-2 conference record.
Katherine Hamilton led the Torero offense with 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field, while also pulling down six rebounds. Aubrey Ward-El, Cori Woodward, and Sydney Williams all recorded nine points apiece with Ward-El adding in five boards, and Woodward dishing out four assists.
As a team, USD shot 43.8% from the field, while Santa Clara shot 42.3%. USD out rebounded the Broncos 31-29, while the Toreros committed 17 turnovers, and the home team committed 19.
For the Broncos, Lori Parkinson led the way with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, and she tied for the team-lead with eight rebounds. Morgan McGwire was the only other player in double figures, as she had 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they head over to league leader BYU for an 11:30 a.m. game. This game will air live on BYUTV.
