PROVO, Utah - Junior guard Aubrey Ward-El scored a career-high 26 points, but it wasn't enough, as the University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped a 81-63 decision to league-leading Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at the Marriott Center.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 8-8 on the season, and move to 2-4 in the WCC. With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-7 overall, and move to 4-2 in the WCC.
Ward-El scored her career-high 26 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while also connecting on 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, and she recorded five rebounds and dished out four assists. Cori Woodward also scored a career-high with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, and she connected on 6-of-9 from the three-point line, and dished out six assists. Sydney Williams was the only other player in double figures, as she scored 12 on 5-of-12 shooting from the field.
As a team, USD shot 39.2% from beyond the arc, while BYU shot 54.0%. USD out rebounded the Cougars, 29-27, but the Toreros turned the ball over 21 times, while BYU turned it over 16 times.
For the Cougars, Cassie Broadhead scored a game-high 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, while pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out six assists. Makenzi Pulsipher added in 18 points, and Kalani Purcell had 15 points.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they welcome the Loyola Marymount Lions to town for a 6 p.m. tip-off inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
