SAN DIEGO, Cailf. - The Toreros finished out the ITA Kick-off Weekend on Sunday at the Marks Stadium at the University of Southern California. The men battled against the No. 8 USC team but lost 6-1.
The Toreros fought hard to gain the point in doubles play but despite hard efforts, they lost the first two matches, with the third match suspended. At the No. 1 doubles position Filip Vittek and Joshua Page battled Brandon Holt and Logan Smith but lost 6-2. At the No. 3 doubles, the duo of Alexandros Araouzos and Gui Osorio battled Jake DeVine and Bellamy, however, they also lost with a final score of 6-2. Guus Koevermans and Joel Gamerov teamed up at the No. 2 spot, but saw their match suspended after being down 5-2.
"We ran into a very good team today and didn't have the goods we needed to be successful," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "We aspired to play confident, aggressive tennis and we did not find that groove until it was too late. You can't work yourself into a match against talented teams like USC. We played much better in doubles, but have a lot to improve on moving forward to get to where I know we can be."
In singles play, Joel Gamerov earned USD's lone point at the No. 4 position. He defeated Jake DeVine with a final score of 7-6(3), 3-6, 1-0(10-3). Josh Page, playing at No. 3 singles, dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 88 Nick Crystal. Next to finish was Guus Koevermans who played in the No. 2 position against #20 Brandon Holt but lost 6-2, 6-3. At No. 6 singles, Alexandros Araouzos was defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Riley Smith.
Finishing after Araouzos was Filip Vittek who played No. 28 Logan Smith in the No. 1 singles slot at the top. Smith won against Vittek with a final score of 6-2, 6-4. Gui Osorio played at the No. 5 position and was downed by Jack Jaede, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. The final match of the day was the win by Gamerov in the No. 4 position.
"I was really proud of Joel and Gui today for how they competed on the big stage," said Coach Keckley. "Overall, a lot of positives to take away from the weekend. We'll get back to work on specific area to prepare for SDSU this coming Saturday"
Although the Toreros had a tough match on Sunday, their record is now 2-1. They pick up play next weekend against the SDSU Aztecs on Saturday, February 4th, at 1 p.m.
