Toreros lock down Long Beach State 74-40

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" Behind a strong second half, the USD women's basketball team (4-1) knocked off Long Beach State 74-40 Wednesday evening inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros, who had 11 players score, were led by Sydney Williams' 18 points. Maya Hood had her first double-double of the year, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Toreros held Long Beach to 27 percent shooting (17-for-64) from the field and 2-for-23 from three-point land. USD also forced 25 turnovers while outrebounding the 49ers 54-32.

It was a rough start offensively for both teams. They each committed seven turnovers in the first six minutes and the Toreros stated out 2-for-15 from the floor, while holding the 49ers to a 3-for-11 start.

The Toreros cut down their turnovers in the second quarter and pushed their lead up to nine points (17-8). Long Beach would get within two points, before USD extended the lead back to five points at the halftime break (24-19). The Toreros forced 16 first half 49er turnovers.

USD was hitting on all cylinders in the third quarter. At one point, they made seven straight shots while Long Beach went 1-for-12 from the floor. This allowed the Toreros to extend their lead to 46-25 at the end of the third quarter.

The Toreros continued to put pressure on the 49ers in the fourth quarter, scoring on 12 of their 16 fourth quarter field goals to push their lead over 30 points.

Long Beach was led Martina McCown's 12 points. She also led her team with eight rebounds.

The Toreros are off until Monday when they travel up the coast to play at UC Santa Barbara.
