SEATTLE, Wash. â€" The USD women's basketball team (5-3) fell at Seattle University 80-73 Saturday afternoon. Three Toreros scored in double-digits, with Alexandra Hagen (6-for-9 shooting) and Aubrey Ward-El leading the way with 17 points. Maya Hood added 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
The Toreros held a 67-61 lead with 4:36 left in the game, but then went cold from the field and the Redhawks finished the game on a 19-6 run.
The Redhawks shot 56 percent from the floor and 62 percent in the second half (18-for-29). USD shot 43 percent for the game and were also efficient in the second half, shooting 16-for-29 (percent). The Toreros committed just nine turnovers and forced Seattle into 18, which led to 21 Torero points.
After trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter, USD fell behind by eight points (25-17) three minutes in to the second quarter, but then finished the half on a 13-5 run to tie the game at 30-30 at halftime.
The Toreros' momentum continued into the second half as they opened up a 39-32 lead with 7:34 left in the third quarter. The Redhawks responded with a run of their own, scoring 17 points in a five-minute stretch to take a two-point lead (49-47).
USD built up a six point lead midway through the fourth quarter, but then didn't score a field goal until there were 14 seconds left, which cut the deficit to two points (75-73). Seattle then hit 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch the seal the win.
The Toreros season-long road swing continues next Thursday when they play at No. 24 California.
