MALIBU, Calif. - Three San Diego players scored in double digits but it was not enough as the Toreros fell, 66-62, to Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by three points with four seconds to play, Aubrey Ward-El got a decent look at a three-pointer but could not get it to fall. The Waves (6-6, 2-0 WCC) hit one of two free throws on the ensuing possession to seal the decision.
Alexandria Young led the Toreros (8-5, 1-1 WCC) with 17 points, while Ward-El added 12 and Maya Hood chipped in 11.
USD was held to 36.5 percent shooting on the day, including a 1-for-11 mark from three-point range. The Toreros also had some trouble from the free-throw line, going 15-for-24.
USD played well defensively but could not slow down a Pepperdine offense that heated up in the final quarter to score 24 points.
Pepperdine started the game strong and took a 17-12 lead after the first quarter. The Toreros battled back in the second and edged the Waves, 15-13, to cut its deficit to 30-27 going into halftime.
USD put up 19 points in the third quarter to take a 46-42 into the final quarter. However, the Toreros were outscored 24-16 in the final quarter and could not find the baskets needed down the stretch to prevent the Pepperdine comeback.
The Toreros will look to get back on track Thursday at 6 p.m. PT when they play host to Portland.
