Toreros competing at WCC Men's Golf Championships

Provo, Utah -- The USD men's golf team is competing in the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The Toreros totaled a solid team score of 1-over par 289 and find themselves tied for sixth with Gonzaga.

Host BYU, the 47th ranked team in the country, is the first round leader at 9-under par 279. Sandwiched between BYU and USD is Saint Mary's (283), Loyola Marymount (286), No. 22 Pepperdine (286) and Santa Clara (286). SCU's Hayden Shieh is the clubhouse leader after carding a 5-under par 67.

The Toreros were paced by their freshman duo of Dalton Hankamer (T9 at 70) and Camilo Mexsen (T14 at 71). Rounding out USD scoring was senior Nick Baines and junior Daniel Lopez, each tied for 26th with their opening round 74's. Junior Regan Kilpatrick is tied for41st after an opening round 77.

A trio of players are one shot back of Shieh after they shot 4-under par 68 -- LMU's Riley Elmes, BYU's Patrick Fishburn and Gonzaga's Angus Montgomery.

USD men's golf will continue WCC Championship second round play on Friday with tee times starting at 7:50 a.m. PDT.
