SAN DIEGO -- A goal by Miguel Berry in the 17th minute propelled San Diego to its first victory of the season, a 1-0 win against UC Santa Barbara on Friday night.

Berry got the play going in the center of the field in the final third. He received a pass and sent a pass to the left side of the 18-yard box to Djordje Babic who was running toward goal.

Babic took a touch then slipped a pass between two defenders back to Berry who slotted a right-footed shot into the right corner of the net.

"It was a well-deserved win," said head coach Seamus McFadden. "We created a lot of looks on goal tonight. I was happy to see Djordje and Miguel get on the same page to get on the scoreboard. Our defense is strong and played well again tonight."

Miguel Berry discussed his game-winning goal after the match.

The Toreros (1-2) controlled the pace of play throughout a majority of the match but needed an outstanding play by defender, Henry Lander, to secure the victory.

With four seconds remaining on the clock, UCSB's (0-1-2) Ignacio Tellechea hit a deflected shot from the top of the right corner of the penalty box headed straight to the top left corner of the goal. However, Lander had hustled back to the goal line and was able to head the ball off the crossbar and away from goal to preserve the 1-0 lead and victory.

Henry Lander discussed his game-saving stop.

It was a well-earned result for USD, which held a commanding 24-11 shot advantage and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. The Toreros spread the ball around with 12 players registering at least one shot.

Thomas Olsen made four saves to continue his strong start to the season. His best stop came in the 63rd minute on a blistering shot by the Gauchos Rodney Michael. Olsen was able to get a hand to the shot and tip it over the crossbar.

The Toreros defense also continued its strong play to earn its first shutout of the season. USD has limited opponents to two goals in the run of play during the first three games.

"This gives us a bit of momentum and confidence," said McFadden. "Happy to get the win tonight."

The Toreros will look to continue its momentum next weekend with a pair of Northern California matchups at Sacramento State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) and at UC Davis on Sunday at 2 p.m.
