PORTLAND â€" Three San Diego players scored in double figures, led by Aubrey Ward-El's 21 points, to earn a dominating, 75-60, victory at Portland on Thursday evening.
It is the second consecutive game Ward-El has contributed a team-high 21 points, doing the same this past Saturday in a, 60-54, win at Loyola Marymount. It is the fourth time this season she has reached the 20-point mark and she has scored at least 10 points in each of the past seven games.
Maya Hood added 11 points and became the all-time career leader in rebounds when she grabbed her first of the game with 5:13 to play in the first quarter. The board gave her 869 in her career, passing Amber Sprague (2004-09) for the top spot. Hood finished the game with four rebounds.
Sydney Williams had a quality game, contributing 10 points, five rebounds and two assists. Caroline Buhr provided a spark off the bench with nine points, while Myah Pace led the team with seven rebounds.
The Toreros (11-7, 4-3 WCC) shot 47.7 percent from the field, including 42.9 percent from 3-point range. USD got to the free-throw line often and went 27 of 37 from the line.
The Toreros jumped out to a big lead and never trailed against the Pilots (4-14, 0-7 WCC). USD took a 23-13 lead in the first quarter and edged the Pilots in the second, 16-15, to take a 39-28 advantage into the break.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Toreros outscored Portland, 36-32, to secure the victory.
USD will look to continue its momentum Saturday at 2 p.m. PT when it plays host to BYU.
