SAN DIEGO - San Diego opened its spring season with a perfect showing against UC Irvine on Friday, winning every doubles and singles match to claim a 7-0 victory.
The Toreros (1-0) dominated in doubles play, dropping only three games combined, and won four of their six singles matches in straight sets.
"This was a long time coming for this young crew," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We worked hard during these last two weeks and made strides individually."
Nico Borter and Gui Osorio set the tone early with a convincing, 6-1, decision against the Anteaters (0-1) Sasha Krasnov and Luis Lopez in doubles play. August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov secured the doubles point shortly after with a, 6-2, decision against Mason Hansen and Luca Marquard.
"Overall, we were very pleased with our doubles play," said Keckley. "We worked at improving the basic fundamentals and it showed. There is still progress to be made but we managed to gain some skills in that area that will help us in matches to come."
Osorio got USD going in singles play with a 6-4, 6-2, victory against Lopez in the No. 1 spot. Holmgren battled Krasnov in the No. 2 spot and earned a gritty, 6-3, 6-7, 10-3, victory.
Gamerov and Borter earned straight-set victories against Hansen (6-4, 6-2) and Vatsal Bajpai (7-5, 6-2), respectively. David Norfeldt made his NCAA debut for the Toreros and cruised to a 6-0, 6-4, win against Takeru Wanatabe.
Alexandros Araouzos capped the perfect start with a comeback victory against Antoine Barthe, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5.
"This Irvine team was tough," said Keckley. "They were missing a few key pieces this morning and still were extremely competitive. We expected to come out with some nerves but we managed them and worked through them together. We got better as each match progressed which is exactly what we wanted out of this group."
The Toreros were slated to play UC San Diego in the back-end of a doubleheader but the match had to be canceled due to weather.
USD will look to continue its momentum next week when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on TCU and either Duke or Louisville.
