First Half Goal Secures Win

Kelsey scores first goal as a Torero to secure 1-0 win

Oct. 18, 2018

MORAGA, Calif.Devyn Kelsey scored her first goal as a Torero to secure a 1-0 win for San Diego on the road at Saint Mary's on Thursday afternoon.

USD (6-7-1) has now won two games in a row on the road and has recorded three shutouts this season.

The Toreros started off hot in the first half, outshooting the Gaels (6-8-2, 1-4-1), 11-3, with five of them on goal.

Junior defender, Kelsey, scored the first and only goal of the match in the 42nd minute. Summer Mason sent a short pass to Mina Ghazizadeh from the corner. Ghazizadeh passed to Marley Walke in the box who sent the ball to Kelsey at the top. Kelsey sent a shot from 15 yards out through traffic, past the goalie, and into the net.

It was Kelsey's first goal of the season and first goal at USD. Ghazizadeh and Walke each recorded their first assists of the season.

Goalkeeper Amber Michel made two saves to preserve the 1-0 victory. Her defense consisting mainly of – Kelsey, Ghazizadeh, Kelley Carusa, and Julianne de Armas – did well limiting the amount of opportunities the Gaels had in the middle of the field.

SMC was able to penetrate the back line more in the second half, but the Toreros defense blocked several crosses to keep the Gaels scoreless.

USD held advantages in shots, 13-7, shots on goal, 6-2, and corners, 9-2.

The Toreros will look to continue their momentum in their next match on Saturday at 7 p.m (PT) when they travel to Pacific.
