Toreros Dominate in Indy

The San Diego offense ignited for a 42-13 victory over Butler

INDIANAPOLIS – San Diego dominated every aspect of its 42-13 victory over Butler on Saturday to move to 4-0 in the Pioneer Football League.

Michael Bandy, Emilio Martinez and Michael Armstead generated over 100 yards of offense apiece for the Toreros (5-2, 4-0 PFL) and quarterback Anthony Lawrence finished the day 22-of-28 for 390 yards and four touchdowns.

Martinez led the Toreros on the ground with 115 yards on 15 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run to start the game. Martinez added 43 receiving yards on five catches for his third-straight game with over 100 total yards.

Armstead generated a season high 159 yards on 4 catches including a 97-yard touchdown play in the first half. Armstead added three kickoff returns for a total of 98 yards and finished the day with 257 all-purpose yards.

San Diego's defense kept the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-3 PFL) off the board in the first half.  Jack Michael forced a fumble on Butler's first drive of the game and Kim Mahoney recovered the ball on USD's 31-yard line. The Toreros capitalized, marching 69 yards and scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run from Terrence Smith to go up 14-0.

The Torero offense put on a show, generating nearly 600 total yards in the contest. San Diego scored on 5-of-6 drives in the first half and would have made it six if not for a forced fumble on the goal line by the Bulldogs with 11:33 to play in the first half.

After a 40-yard reception by Michael Bandy, Butler punched the ball out and into the end zone for a touchback. The Bulldogs marched 78 yards but the Torero defense held on 4th-and-goal when Arrion Archie broke up a pass by Will Marty to give USD the ball back.

Bandy got his revenge with 27 seconds left in the half, when he hauled in a one-handed grab for 29 yards to put the Toreros up 35-0. Bandy finished the day with five catches for 129 yards and one touchdown.

The Bulldogs scored quick to start the second half on a 61-yard touchdown pass from Marty to Stephen Dennis.

The teams then traded possessions for the majority of the period before USD scored with 14 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Lawrence found tight end Dalton Kincaid for 14 yards and Kincaid's second touchdown of the game.

The Torero defense limited the Bulldogs to 85 rushing yards, with only 11 coming in the first half and Butler finished the day 0-for-3 on 4th down conversions.

San Diego was led by Jack Michael with a career high 12 tackles (7 solo), including one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Arrion Archie added seven tackles (6 solo) and three pass break-ups, including the goal line stop.

The USD pass rush put pressure on Butler from the start. Nick Friedel was credited with four quarterback hurries and Kevin Glajchen found Marty in the back field for a sack and a loss of 9 yards.

With the win, San Diego extends its PFL winning streak to 25 games and remains undefeated in conference play. The Toreros return home to take on Jacksonville next Saturday at Torero Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
