SAN DIEGO — After a tough defensive battle, the Toreros ended the Gaels' perfect record in a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Torero Stadium.
Â
The San Diego (5-7-4, 1-1-2 WCC) defense held off the Saint Mary's (14-0-1, 3-0-1 WCC) attack for almost 67 minutes before SMC was awarded a penalty kick. SMC forward Stephen Dougherty sent one in to left corner of the net to put the Gaels up 1-0.Â
Â
The Toreros answered in the 85th minute when
Patric Krall sent a pass in from the left sideline that
Miguel Berry headed in for the equalizer. It was Krall's second assist of the season and the sixth goal for Berry.
Saint Mary's outshot San Diego 11-3 but the Toreros played outstanding defense to keep the Gaels from the net. USD blocked several strong shots from SMC early, including a stop when goal keeper
Matt Wiher came out to challenge.  Wiher finished the night with eight saves in goal for the Toreros, tying his career high.
The Toreros had several close calls in overtime but neither team was able to find a game-winner. The Gaels held the advantage in shots (11-3), and corners (6-3). San Diego registered a single shot-on-goal compared to 10 from Saint Mary's, but that proved to be enough for the draw.
