Lander's Late Goal Secures Victory

San Diego defeats Pacific 2-1

SAN DIEGO — A late goal by Henry Lander was the decider in San Diego's 2-1 victory over Pacific on Sunday at Torero Stadium.

Aaron Frey put the Toreros (6-7-4, 2-1-2 WCC) on the board in the 59th minute after some quick footwork to beat his defenders. The Tigers (9-4-1, 3-2-0 WCC) answered in 73rd minute with a goal of their own to tie it up, but Lander's goal in the 86th minute clinched it for USD.

After a scoreless first half, Frey took a pass from Till Stockmann on the left side and beat three Pacific defenders to the goal. Tigers goalkeeper Mateo Gomez came out to challenge the shot and Frey sent it in to put the Toreros up 1-0. It was the second goal of the season for Frey and the second assist for Stockmann.

The Tigers answered in the 73rd minute on a long pass in from the right sideline by Cory Wright. Pacific's Camden Riley deflected the ball just enough to send it past Wiher's reach and in for the tie.

San Diego outshot the Tigers in the second half, 4-1, and after drawing a foul in the 86th minute, Miguel Berry sent a free kick in to Lander who was waiting in front of the goal. It was first goal of the season for Lander.

The Toreros held the advantage in shots (7-5) and corner kicks (4-3). Goalkeeper Matt Wiher registered a single save, which came in the third minute of the contest when he deflected a high left to right shot from 25 yards out.

San Diego will head on the road this week to face Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. on Sunday, before returning home for their final match of the season on Friday, Nov. 9against Santa Clara.
