Berry Leads Toreros to Overtime Victory

Miguel Berry scored twice to propel San Diego to a 2-1 victory over LMU

LOS ANGELES — Miguel Berry came up big for San Diego, scoring both goals in USD's 2-1 victory over Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

After falling behind 1-0, Berry scored in the 75th minute to bring the Toreros (7-7-4, 3-1-2 WCC) even with the Lions (5-12, 2-4 WCC) and send San Diego into overtime for the seventh time this season.

Three minutes into the first overtime period, Berry went sprinting up the right side, beating four LMU defenders. He sent in a shot from 10 yards out that deflected off a Lion defender and in for the golden goal.

San Diego outshot LMU in the first half 6-4, with several good opportunities but was unable to find the back of the net.

After heading into halftime tied 0-0, the Toreros came out aggressive to start the second period. Josiah Benjamin had a strong shot from 10 yards out that looked as if it was headed in but LMU goalkeeper Mitchell Wilson leapt up to deflect the ball over the crossbar.

However, it was the Lions who were first to score. In the 50th minute, Matt Wiher deflected an LMU shot but Dylan Shockey was there to send the deflection in and put the Lions up, 1-0.

The Toreros answered in the 75th minute, when Aaron Frey sent in a long cross from the left sideline and Berry headed it inside the opposite post for his first goal of the day. Berry would then cap off the day with the game winner in the 93rd minute for his eighth goal of the season.

San Diego outshot Loyola 16-13 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-4. Goalkeeper Matt Wiher had a solid day between the posts, finishing with six saves.

The Toreros return home for their final contest of the season when they face Santa Clara on Friday at 7 p.m. for Senior Day.
