SAN DIEGO –
Summer Mason scored the game-winning goal with five minutes left in the match to secure a 1-0 win against San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.
With the win the Toreros (8-8-1,4-4) make a Top 4 WCC finish bid and record their fifth shutout this season.
The match was scoreless until Mason's breakaway in the 85th minute. She stole the ball from USF (10-7-2, 3-3-2), sprinted 80 yards down the right side past three defenders, and finished it off to the left side of net. With the goal, Mason now has 17 points and six goals this season.
Defense was strong for the Dons and the Toreros in the first half with only five shots being recorded in the first 45 minutes.
The Toreros backline consisting mainly of –
Devyn Kelsey,
Kelley Carusa,
Michaela Foster, and
Mina Ghazizadeh – stopped the Dons from getting any shots on goal in the first half.
The pace of play changed drastically in the second half with both teams generating multiple scoring opportunities. USD recorded eight corner kicks alone in the second half.
The Don's closest opportunity to scoring came in the 76th minute. Sydney Cooper sent a cross to Cassidy George, but goalkeeper
Amber Michel made a diving save to the left to keep the Dons scoreless. Michel recorded three saves.
USD held advantages in shots (11-9), shots on goal (5-3), and corners (9-2).
The Toreros have their final conference match at Pepperdine on Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
