SAN DIEGO – Megan Jacobsen and
Roxie Wiblin recorded 10 kills apiece but it was not enough to take down No. 1 BYU, as the Toreros fell, 3-1, Friday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Â
After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Toreros (7-9, 4-2 WCC) became the fifth team this season to take a set from the top-ranked Cougars (16-0, 6-0 WCC), winning the second, 26-24. However, USD could not sustain the momentum and dropped the third (25-16) and fourth (25-10) sets.
Â
Jacobsen continued her strong play and hit .318 on the night. It is the second time in the past three matches she has registered 10 kills and she has at least eight kills in each of the past four matches.
Â
Addie Picha did it all for the Toreros, leading the team in hitting percentage (.467) with eight kills, and recorded four blocks, a dig and an assist.
Â
It was a tough night offensively overall for USD, which hit a season-low .046. BYU's Kennedy Eschenberg and Heather Gneiting played well at the net, contributing seven and six blocks, respectively.
Â
The Toreros did not have an answer for the Cougars' Roni Jones-Perry who racked up a match-high 23 kills and hit .465 on the night.
Â
Anna Newsome led USD with 23 assists and was third on the team with seven digs.
The match began as a back-and-forth affair with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage until the match was tied, 15-15. The Toreros appeared to take a 16-15 lead on the ensuing point but a lengthy discussion among the officials regarding a call during the set led to the point being awarded to BYU.
Â
The call was challenged by Toreros head coach,
Jennifer Petrie, but the call ultimately stood. The Cougars capitalized on the fortunate call in their favor and won the next three points to take command of the set, 19-15.
Â
The Toreros closed the gap to 22-20 on a kill by Picha but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars sealed the first set, 25-21.
Â
USD's offense came alive in the second set and the Toreros jumped out to an early lead, 4-1, that it would hold for a majority of the set. Jacobsen dominated the set, recording six of her 10 kills in the frame.
Â
The Toreros extended their lead to 15-9 and 20-12 and it seemed inevitable they would tie the match. However, with USD leading 24-17, BYU rattled off seven straight points to tie the match at, 24-24.
Â
The Toreros would not be denied and won the next two points, capped by a block by
Roxie Wiblin and Picha, to win the set, 26-24, and level the match at 1-1.
Â
The Cougars took back the momentum in the third set with an early rally and 7-3 lead. USD eventually closed the gap to two, 12-10, but the Cougars reeled off a 6-2 run to go up 18-12. BYU won the set, 25-16.
Â
BYU's momentum continued in the fourth set as it took a commanding 13-5 lead and stretched it to 22-8. A block by Eschenberg and Jones-Perry sealed the set for the Cougars, 25-10, and the victory, 3-1.
Â
USD hits the road next week for a pair of matches at Santa Clara and at San Francisco.
