LOS ANGELES – Lauren Fuller recorded a career-high 22 kills to pace San Diego to a 3-1 victory over No. 13 Cal Poly in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night.

The Toreros (17-12) hit .264 in the match to take down the Mustangs (25-3), 25-19, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-22, to advance to the NCAA second round for the third time in four years.
San Diego came out aggressive to start the match behind the balanced attack from Fuller and
Roxie Wiblin who notched a team-high eight kills in the first set. The teams traded the lead for a majority of the first set with 10 ties, before USD closed on a 7-1 run to finish, 25-19.Â

Fuller picked up right where she left off, registering the first three Torero kills to start the second set. After an early back-and-forth, San Diego took command at 7-6 and never relinquished the lead, hitting a blazing .529 and committing only one hitting error.
The Toreros cooled off in the third set, hitting just .161. Cal Poly went on a 5-1 run midway through the set after three Torero hitting errors and a service ace put the Mustangs on top, 15-11. USD answered with three consecutive kills from
Katie Lukes and a block by
Megan Jacobsen and
Cami May to put the Toreros right back in it, 15-16. But the Mustangs would not give up the lead, powering their way to a 25-23 victory to stay alive in the match.

The fourth set remained tightly contested, with six ties and three lead changes. The Toreros went on a 4-0 run late in the set behind kills from
Addie Picha and Wiblin and an ace from
Payton Douglass. USD ended the match with a combined block by Jacobsen and May to clinch the win.
Fuller led the team with 22 kills, hitting .419 on 43 attempts and just four errors. Wiblin finished the night with 15 kills and one ace while Picha chipped in nine kills and a team-high six blocks.
Anna Newsome recorded a double-double, leading the team in assists (22) and digs (12). Â

The Toreros are back in action Saturday when they face USC at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16.Â
