LONG BEACH, Calif. – San Diego won its first away game of the season at Long Beach State, 60-56, on Thursday night as
Patricia Brossmann recorded a double-double.
Brossmann led the team with 17 points and a tied a career-high of 11 rebounds to help the Toreros (5-3) control the lead for all but three minutes of the match.
The Toreros got off to quick start holding an eight-point lead within the first nine minutes of the match; however, the 49'ers (1-8) rallied in the second quarter outscoring USD 12-10, to pull within two points heading into the second half.
Coming out of the locker room, the 49'ers took the lead for the first time since the start of the match, when Naomi Hunt scored a three on their first play. After two minutes into the second half, USD did not give up the lead the rest of the match. Brossmann helped seal the victory by making all six of her six attempts inside the paint in the second half.
USD struggled from behind the arc all night only making two of their ten three-point attempts, so they were forced to score points in the field.
Myah Pace,
Sydney Hunter and
Madison Pollock all reached the double digits scoring 13, 11, and 10 points respectively.
Ultimately it was the Toreros defense that helped them win the match. USD held advantages in total rebounds, 42-30, and offensive rebounds, 28-19. Pollock chipped in with six rebounds and Hunter with five. Brossmann also recorded a season-high five steals.
USD looks to continue its momentum when it plays host to Cal State San Bernardino on Monday at 5 p.m. (PT).
