SAN DIEGO - Kailey Hill hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk-off Cal State Bakersfield, 4-2, and lead San Diego to its fifth straight victory Sunday afternoon.
With one out and a runner on first, Hill launched the first pitch she saw over the left field fence. It was her second homer of the season and capped an impressive opening weekend for the senior outfielder in which she hit .529 (9-for-17) with seven RBIs and a .941 slugging percentage.
Halle Kyler (3-0) gave the Toreros (5-1) another solid outing in the circle, coming in as relief in the second inning and limiting the Roadrunners (0-5) to one run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings.
It was a game of missed opportunities for both teams. The Toreros left runners on base in each of the first five innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the first. CSUB loaded the bases in three of the first four innings but only managed to produce one run in that span.
Holding a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning, the Toreros had its lead disappear after a mental mistake on a bunt coverage and an error allowed the Roadrunners to level the game at 2-2.
Hill made sure USD ended the weekend with a victory in the bottom half of the inning, delivering a game-winning two-run homer to left field.
The Toreros played well defensively, highlighted by a great play by shortstop Hannah Gilliland to end the top of the fifth inning. She went deep into the hole on the left side of the infield, backhanded a hard-hit grounder and threw to first off her back leg in time to get the runner.
Sunday's win capped an impressive opening weekend for the Toreros. Freshmen pitchers Kyler and Hannah Boos were terrific all weekend and combined to hold opponents to 12 runs - nine earned - in 38 1/3 innings.
Along with Hill's hot offensive start, Lauren Kane hit .438 (7-for-16) on the weekend with five RBIs, five runs and two doubles. Freshman Katie Vretzos enjoyed a quality start to her collegiate career, going 7-for-20 (.350) with five runs, two RBIs, a triple and four stolen bases.
The Toreros will look to extend their five-game winning streak next weekend when they travel to Tempe, Arizona, for the Littlewood Classic.
