SAN DIEGO - Despite a 20-4 run in the third quarter and 17 points from Maya Hood and Aubrey Ward-El, the Toreros were unable to finish a comeback against Pacific on Thursday, falling, 62-60.
Hood started the game with a pair of lay-ups to give the Toreros a 4-0 lead. The Tigers answered with a 9-3 run to take the lead before Ward-El hit a three-pointer to tie the score at, 10-10.
Pacific began the second quarter with an 8-0 scoring streak to lead the Toreros 23-12. Patricia Brossmann registered the first points of the quarter for the Toreros with a jump shot for two. This started a USD scoring rally that brought the Toreros within six points of Pacific at the end of the first half.
USD quickly answered Pacific's early layup in the third with their own by Caroline Buhr which ignited a 20-4 run by the Toreros and gave them a 48-40 lead to end the quarter. The Toreros attacked the hoop and put the Tigers in a bit of foul trouble during the quarter.
A strong start to the fourth by Pacific's Luaulu-Summers, brought the Tigers back into the game with as they tied it at 54-54 with three minutes left in regulation. The Toreros battled but they were unable to complete the comeback and were defeated, 62-60.
The Toreros head to Provo, Utah, on Saturday to take on BYU at 11 a.m. PT.
