SAN DIEGO â€" The USD Toreros earned an impressive 7-6 victory over No. 4 ranked Arkansas in today's first game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy at Fowler Park. Junior LHP Anthony Donatella was credited with the pitching victory as he scattered 3 hits over three innings that started in the fifth. Trailing 3-0 through the top of the third, junior Tyler Herburger blasted a two-run homer that knocked home Brhet Bewley who opened the inning with a single to left.
Trailing 3-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, USD scored five runs on just four hits to take control of the game. USD received RBI singles from Paul Kunst, Jay Schuyler, Kevin Collard and Bewley. Daniel Gardner also knocked in a run with a sacrifice bunt that scored Collard. The Toreros also took advantage to two Razorback errors in the inning in jumping out to a 7-3 advantage.
Arkansas rallied to add a run in the seventh when Casey Opitz opened with a double off of Donatella and would eventually score on a single by Eric Cole. Justin Friedman came in to pitch in the eighth inning and gave up a 2-1 single to Grant Koch that made it a one-run game. In the ninth Friedman got three straight Razorbacks to fly out to notch his first save of the season.
Junior LHP Nick Sprengel got his first start of the season and totaled eight strikeouts over four innings while scattering just three hits and allowing three runs. USD pitching totaled 11 strikeouts for the game. Five Toreros collected two hits at the plate â€" Paul Kunst, Tora Otsuka, Jay Schuyler, Kevin Collard and Brhet Bewley. Some fine defensive plays were turned in the by Toreros including Jeff Houghtby at short, Brhet Bewley at third and Daniel Gardner in center.
USD (6-2), winners of five straight, look to make it six to close out the Tony Gwynn Legacy with No. 23 Arizona this afternoon.
