Houston, TX â€" The USD Toreros dropped a 5-2 decision to the Houston Cougars this evening at Schroeder Park. San Diego held a 2-1 lead through three innings but the Cougars struck for three runs in the 4th inning and added an insurance run in the 6th.
Jay Schuyler went 3-for-3 at the plate and reached base in four attempts. Sophomore LHP Chris Murphy (1-1) took the loss for the Toreros as he scattered 8 hits over 6.0 innings, giving up five runs and totaling four strikeouts. Freshman Gabriel Ponce closed out the final two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Houston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Slaughter opened with a walk and eventually would score on a wild pitch. San Diego (8-7) jumped ahead 2-1 in the third. Paul Kunst opened with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tora Otsuka would reach on a fielder's choice and Kunst would score on a throwing error by pitcher Aaron Fletcher. Otsuka would score the second run of the inning off a sacrifice fly by Brhet Bewley.
In the 4th inning Murphy was touched for five straight Cougar singles to open the inning with Cooper Coldiron getting the key 2-run single up the middle. Houston (8-6) would add an insurance run in the 6th for their second straight win over the Toreros. Fletcher improved his record to 3-0 on the season as he pitched 6.0 innings and allowed just two unearned runs while striking out two. Rey Fuentes went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored for Houston.
