HOUSTON â€" Junior LHP Nick Sprengel pitched a one-hitter through six innings against the Houston Cougars in the series final as the Toreros earned a 7-4 victory. Sprengel earns his first win in three starts as the Toreros improve to 9-7 on the year. Adam Kerner went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs and one RBI. Daniel Gardner went 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, including a key 2-run shot in the 7th inning. The Toreros scored single runs in the 2nd, 4th and 6th innings. It was the 3-run 7th inning that gave the Toreros a commanding 6-0 lead with Gardner providing the big hit.
Louie Crow relieved Sprengel in the 7th and got three quick outs. In the 8th inning the Cougars scored four runs with back-to-back two-out RBI singles and two bases-loaded walks. Justin Friedman relieved Crow with the bases loaded and walked Cooper Coldiron to pull the Cougars within 6-4. Anthony Donatella got Grayson Padgett to pop-up to Paul Kunst to end the inning.
In the top of the 9th Shane McGuire opened with a walk and advanced to third on Adam Kerner's single down the right field line. Tyler Herburger's RBI single through the left side gave the Toreros an insurance run in making the score 7-4. Donatella closed out the 9th inning for his first save of the year.
Paul Kunst, Jay Schuyler and Jeff Houghtby (2 RBIs) also chipped in two hits each as the Toreros totaled 16 hits and six doubles.
USD returns for four home games this week. On Tuesday the Toreros host San Diego State at 6:00 p.m., and close out the week with a three-game WCC series with Santa Clara beginning on March 14th. USD won the first meeting with SDSU this season by the score of 4-3 in 10 innings.
