SAN DIEGO - A late comeback effort by Joel Gamerov at the No. 3 position came up just short as No. 44 San Diego dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 37 Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon.

For the second day in a row, the Toreros (6-6) were tied 3-3 with the deciding match falling to Gamerov. The Toreros fell behind early after losing the doubles point but had won three of the first five singles matches to even the score.

Gamerov trailed 5-4 in the third set but pulled out an impressive win to level the set at 5-5. However, Alex Sendegeya won the final two matches to win, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5, and seal the victory for the Red Raiders (16-5).

It was a tough finish to the weekend for the Toreros, which finished the Spring Invite with a 1-2 record and were just a few points away from winning the two matches they lost.

"The boys learned how to compete this weekend," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "For a program like ours, progress isn't defined through wins and losses. It's defined through weekends like these. We made a huge step forward during this tournament. I am extremely proud of how my boys stayed the course facing adversity and pressure. They competed with class and most importantly, competed as a unit."

Texas Tech jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead winning at the No. 2 (6-2) and No. 3 (6-0) doubles positions.

However, the Toreros answered with two quick singles wins. First, David Norfeldt won his match at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Borter quickly followed with a, 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 4.

The Red Raiders leveled the score at 2-2 when Jackson Cobb defeated Alex Araouzos at No. 6, 7-5, 6-3.

Gui Osorio dropped the first set, 6-3, but battled back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-0, and give the Toreros a 3-2 lead..

Tommy Mylnikov leveled the score at 3-3 with a victory at the No. 1 position against August Holmgren, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

The match came down to the No. 3 spot. Gamerov won the first set, 6-2, and was just edged in the second set, 7-6. After tying the deciding set at 5-5, Sendegeya won the last two sets to win 7-5 and claim the victory for the Red Raiders.

The Toreros will look to get back on track Wednesday at 2 p.m. when they play host to Washington.
