SANTA CLARA, Calif. - San Diego's four-match winning streak came to a close Sunday as the Toreros dropped a 4-0 decision at Santa Clara.
The defeat also snapped the Toreros (10-8, 4-1 WCC) six-match winning streak against the Broncos (11-8, 3-3 WCC), dating back to the second round of the 2012 WCC Championships.
"We flat out got outcompeted today in certain spots," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We were rattled by the environment and we let it effect the way we played. We came out a little flat in doubles and singles. Against a good team like Santa Clara, you can't afford to do that. We will learn from this and move forward as we always do. We have a team that listens and is hungry for success. We will regroup and look to take advantage of some home matches this coming week."
USD got off to a strong start in doubles play with Alex Araouzos and David Norfeldt making quick work of the Broncos Connor Garnett and Kamran Khan, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Santa Clara responded with a 6-3 win at the second position to level the match at, 1-1.
August Holmgren and Joel Gamerov were unable to secure the doubles point and fell to Andrew Gu and Robert Seby, 6-4. Santa Clara won the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead.
The Toreros had a tough day in singles play with all three of the Broncos singles victories coming in straight sets. Santa Clara doubled its lead to 2-0 when Norfeldt fell to Garnett at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2.
USD continued to battle but came up short in multiple spots throughout the day.
Gamerov dropped a close first set to Jesus Barajas, 6-4, then suffered a 7-6 (5) result in the second set as the Broncos extended their lead to 3-0.
Shortly after the conclusion of Gamerov's match, Santa Clara secured the victory when Pratt Keerasuntonpong fell to Sebastien Mathieu in the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-3.
August Holmgren won his first set at No. 1, 6-3, dropped the second, 6-4, but was leading 1-0 in the third before his match was halted.
Nico Borter Won his first set 6-4 and was on the verge of winning his match, holding a 5-3 lead in the second set, before his match was stopped.
The Toreros will look to get back on track when they return home for a pair of WCC matches next weekend against Pepperdine and LMU.
