SAN DIEGO - A big offensive day by Taylor Spence was not enough to help San Diego complete a series sweep against Saint Mary's as the Toreros fell, 6-4, on Saturday at the USD Softball Complex.
USD (23-17, 2-1 WCC) held a lead for a majority of the game but the Gaels (11-23, 1-2 WCC) rallied for five runs over the final three innings to secure the comeback decision.
It was a tough result for the Toreros, especially since they got the first two batters out in each of the final three innings and Saint Mary's scored all of their runs with two outs.
The decision spoiled an impressive offensive day by Spence, who went 4-for-4 with four singles, an RBI, a run and a stolen base. She moved into eighth place all-time in USD program history in career hits with 171.
Five other USD players registered a hit apiece but the Toreros had trouble stringing together their offense. The Toreros went 2-for-13 (.154) with runners in scoring position and left runners stranded in each of the first six innings.
Hannah Boos got the start in the circle and was strong through 5 2/3 innings, limiting the Gaels to four runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Delaney Heller (9-7) entered the game in relief and finished the final 1 1/3 innings.
The Toreros took an early lead in the second inning when Spence delivered an RBI-single to bring in Shannon McKeon.
The lead did not last long as Saint Mary's scored in the top of the third to level the score at 1-1. Kailey Hill and Sara Silveyra hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the bottom half of the inning and put the Toreros up, 2-1.
USD doubled its run total and extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Savannah Shields scored on a wild pitch and Hill sent a sacrifice fly to right field.
A solo home run by the Gaels in the fifth cut the Toreros lead to 4-2. Saint Mary's struck for a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to level the score at 4-4.
The Gaels completed the comeback when Abbey Mariani hit a two-RBI double to left field in the top of the seventh to give Saint Mary's a 6-4 lead.
The Toreros were unable to mount a comeback and went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
USD continues conference play next weekend when it travels to Santa Clara for a three-game series.
