SAN DIEGO – An early goal by
Summer Mason gave San Diego an early lead but Washington State scored twice in the final eight minutes to secure a, 2-1, result on Friday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
Mason put USD on the scoreboard first, with a 29th minute goal on a left-footed shot to the top right corner.
Milan Moses and
Marley Walke each contributed to the strong offensive push early, with two shots on goal each. The Toreros outshot the Cougars in the first half, 6-3.
Goalkeeper
Amber Michel got the start and recorded two saves in the 66:57 minutes she was in the match.
Allie Jara finished the match and also made two saves.
Washington State scored their two goals just three minutes apart in the second half. Maddy Haro scored first in the 83rd minute, with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Allie Jara stopped a shot by Brianna Alger in the 85th minute, but Morgan Weaver followed the shot and scored off the rebound to put the Cougars up 2-1.
The Toreros continued to press forward but could not cut into the Cougars' lead.
USD heads to Virginia Tech in their regular-season opener on Aug. 17 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
