Season Opener Ends in Draw

Michel makes two saves in double overtime to keep Virginia Tech scoreless

SAN DIEGO – San Diego had numerous opportunities to score but could not find the finishing touch at Virginia Tech, as the Toreros settled for a 0-0 draw in double-overtime Friday night.
 
USD (0-0-1) had a strong offensive effort throughout the game beating out the Hokies (0-0-1) in shots on goal, 7-4, and corners, 8-5.
 
Multiple Toreros players had opportunities throughout the match to get on the score sheet but could not find the finishing touch.
 
The Toreros best opportunity to score in the first half came in the 13th minute, when a cross came in from the left side of the field and Madison Louderback got her foot on it to redirect it toward the goal. Virginia Tech's goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn was able to get her hand on the ball just before it crossed the line to keep the game scoreless.
 
Summer Mason led the Toreros with seven shots, including two on goal. Her best opportunity came in the 65th minute when she hit the post.
 
Milan Moses nearly got the Toreros on the board in the 77th minute. She shot from 18 yards out, but McGlynn got her hand on it. The rebound was left in front of an open goal. Summer Mason shot, but the Hokies goalie responded with a save again.
 
Moses almost ended the game in first overtime with a shot on goal in the 96th minute. She found room between defenders 20 yards out but the Hokies goalie made the save to keep the clock rolling.
 
-USD's defense was stellar all night and helped secure the draw with excellent play in the overtime periods when the Hokies increased their offensive pressure.
 
The Toreros defense shut out the Hokies, with goalkeeper Amber Michel making four saves.
 
It was the second straight year the teams squared off in the season opener and the match went to double-overtime.
 
The Toreros finish off the Virginia Tech tournament against Georgia at 8 a.m. PT, Friday at Thompson Field.
