SEATTLE – Lauren Fuller racked up 14 kills but it was not enough as No. 14 San Diego fell at No. 17 Washington, 3-0, Saturday night.

The Toreros (0-2) had a tough night offensively, hitting just .111 on the match. The Huskies (2-0) made multiple quality defensive plays to compliment a .264 night of hitting.

Fuller had a terrific night for the Toreros, leading the team in kills (14), total attacks (29), hit percentage (.345) and digs (7).

Anna Newsome handled a majority of the distribution, contributing a team-high 23 assists.
Kelli Barry had a nice showing off the bench, pitching in six digs and three assists.

USD had trouble slowing down the Huskies, Kara Bajema, who accumulated a team-high 13 kills. Avie Niece also played well for Washington and held a .600 hit percentage with six kills on 10 attempts.

USD got off to a tough start in the first set. After trading points with the Huskies to start, Washington began to take control and took a 14-8 lead. The Huskies eventually went on a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 23-12, forcing a timeout by the Toreros. USD managed three more points but Washington earned the final two points to win the set, 25-15.

The momentum seemed to be shifting the Toreros way in the second set as USD held advantages at multiple points during the set. However, with USD leading 21-20, the Huskies reeled off five straight points to win, 25-21, and take a commanding, 2-0, lead in the match into the break.

It was more of the same in the third set with the Toreros showing flashes of brilliance and seeming to snatch away the momentum, only to have Washington respond with a stellar play of its own to answer. The Huskies held a slight lead throughout the duration of the set before ending on a 9-3 run to seal a 25-16 set win and a 3-0 match decision.

The Toreros will look to bounce back in its home debut against No. 16 Baylor on Saturday at 7 p.m. (PT). USD will follow that match with a showdown against No. 11 UCLA on Sunday at 5 p.m.
