Summer Training Showcased

San Diego races at the Mark Covert Classic

SAN DIEGO - San Diego was up early to take on its first race at the Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton, Saturday morning. The Toreros showed off their pack running in an early season 5k, to place ninth as a team. 

Sophomore Hannah Rasmussen led the Toreros running 6:02 pace, finishing with a time of 18:46.3, placing her 42nd overall. Sophomore Molly Klein, 19:03.3, and senior Zani Moore, 19:22.9, rounded out the top three for USD. Freshman Morgan Conn had a strong first race as a Torero with a time of 19:38.9, finishing fourth on the team.

RUNNER'S TAKE:
Captain Natalie North-Cole believed "...there were a lot of standout performances from people who normally are not in the varsity pack. A lot of underclassmen stepped up today and really made this a good day for us."

Captain Hailey Purtzer further addressed the excellent pack work and reflected on the summer journey that helped build up this fundamental part of Torero running. "I think it was a good start to the season. Lot of first timers gave great effort today. We have a long road and a lot of work ahead of us but I'm confident in our ability to perform going forward."

Molly Klein, who finished second for the Toreros commented that "...our summer work showed today, but our peak is a long way off because we have a lot of room to grow. We're in the best spot we can be for the beginning of the season."

COACH GUARINO'S TAKE:
"The Fullerton meet brought in more quality teams than usual that show up for the opener.  This provided with more depth of competition for each athlete. This helped our women find competition in areas that often find gaps.  I was pleased to see development in women that last year were not in our Varsity. I am so excited to see them grow into their new racing roles."
