IRVINE, Calif – San Diego rallied in the second half, but came up short, in a 2-1 loss to UC Irvine Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.
USD (4-4-1) held advantages in shots, 14-6, and shots on goal, 10-2, but could not find the back of the net to secure the win.
The Anteaters (4-5-1) scored two goals in three minutes to hold on to the lead the entire match. The first came in the 24th minute, when UCI's Claire Grouwinkel beat out Goalkeeper
Amber Michel to score on an open net. UCI's Grouwinkel scored minutes later just out of reach for Michel in a diving save to the left.
The Toreros did not back down, dominating possession in the second half. USD had eight of its six shots on goal, while holding UCI to zero shots the entire second half.
Summer Mason scored the Toreros only goal in the 76th minute, streaking down the left wing. UCI's keeper stopped her first shot, but Mason deflected the rebound in for the goal.
Julianne De Armas came close to tying up the match with five minutes left on the clock. She shot from forty yards out but the ball sailed inches above the crossbar to leave the score at 2-1.
Milan Moses and
Katie Lapomarda helped with the attack up top each recording two shots on goal.
The Toreros start conference play on Thursday night at 7 p.m. (PT) against Portland in Torero Stadium.
