Toreros Face Highlanders

San Diego will take on UC Riverside on Friday

SAN DIEGO – San Diego will face UC Riverside on Friday at Torero Stadium at 7 p.m., before beginning conference play.

The Toreros (4-4-2) will look to build on the momentum from their Sunday night victory over CSUN, when they play host to the Highlanders (1-7-1).

Live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com and the match will be streamed via theW.tv.

LAST TIME OUT
• Miguel Berry scored the winning goal for the Toreros in the 82nd minute of Sunday's 1-0 victory over the Matadors in Northridge, Calif. Berry sent a pass from Reuben Dass through three defenders, off the left post and in to give USD its fourth win of the season.

• Despite a 17-6 shot advantage, CSUN could not get a ball past goalkeeper Matt Wiher who recorded a career-high eight saves in the contest.

UC RIVERSIDE SERIES HISTORY
• The Toreros own a 5-1-2 record against the Highlanders in the all-time series. USD and UCR last met up in 2016, when the Toreros dropped a 2-0 contest after the Highlanders scored two goals in the second half.

LEADERS AT THE HALF
• Halfway through the season, the Torero offense is led by Miguel Berry with 14 shots on goal and two goals on the season.

• Goalkeeper Matt Wiher is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA in goals against average (0.44). He has tallied 24 saves in seven matches, a 3-1-2 record, and has allowed only three goals.

BRIAN QUINN ERA BEGINS
• After eight seasons as an assistant coach and three years as an associate head coach, Quinn took the reins of the program in 2018 and made his head coaching debut against UC Irvine on Aug. 24. Seamus McFadden, who served as the head coach for the first 39 years of the program, remains on Quinn's staff as an assistant. Mike Nicholson continues on as an assistant coach and enters his 14th year with the program in 2018.

RETURNING IN 2018
• The Toreros return eight starters and 16 letterwinners from its 2017 squad, including United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region selections, Miguel Berry and Henry Lander.

• Berry had an outstanding sophomore campaign at striker, leading USD in points (15), goals (5) and assists (5). He was named to the All-WCC first team after earning honorable mention recognition as a freshman.

• Lander was an All-WCC second team selection, anchoring USD's backline and helping limit opponents to 18 goals in 17 matches. Among his numerous standout plays throughout the season, his most impressive highlight occurred when he preserved a 1-0 victory for the Toreros against UC Santa Barbara, heading away a shot on the goal line with four seconds remaining in regulation.

• USD also returns WCC Freshman of the Year, Aaron Frey, who will help solidify the backline. Frey, Berry and Lander were all named to the 2018 All-WCC Preseason team.

• All-WCC honorable mention, Freddy Polzer, also returns and will be a key piece to the midfield and attack. He'll likely be joined by senior, Gustav Brandt, who provides size, physicality and quality distribution through the center of the field.

TAKING OVER IN GOAL
• The Toreros will look to Connor Hountalas, Matt Wiher and Marley Mascarenas to fill the void in goal left by four-year starter, Thomas Olsen, who graduated this past year. Olsen played every minute of the 2017 season and was drafted in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids.

CHALLENGING SCHEDULE AHEAD
• The Toreros have had a challenging nonconference schedule to start the season, including two opponents ranked in the top ten. The road won't get any easier as they begin a tough WCC slate on October 7 at San Francisco.
